One loss by one point.

It's likely the reason the Warhawks are forced to travel to Salem, Ore., Saturday to face the undefeated Willamette University Bearcats at 2 p.m. in the second round of the Division III football playoffs.

Commentary: Iowa the best in Big Ten

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

It may be early, but I'll say it now:

Iowa will be the best football team in the Big Ten in 2009.

Forget that Mitch King, Matt Kroul and Bradley Fletcher leave the defense with three gaping holes on the depth chart - Shaun Prater, Jordan Bernstine, Broderick Binns, Chad Geary, and Karl Klug are all good enough to start on a top-level defense right now.

Should Iowa leapfrog other Big Ten schools?

( NO ) - Get over yourselves, Hawkeye fans. Just because you supposedly "travel well" is not a good enough reason to pass either Michigan State or Northwestern for a chance to play in either the Capital One or Outback Bowls.

The regular season couldn't have ended any better for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Using 24 second-quarter points, Iowa went into the Metrodome on Nov. 22 and steamrollered the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 55-0. It was the largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game during Kirk Ferentz's 10 seasons as head coach.

The Times-Delphic, Drake University, IA

As a member of the Pride of the North, I would like to submit a response to Mr. Klekner's hockey band review, point-by-point.

Point 1) We are students too! Every member of the hockey band has worked hard for their spot.

To be in the hockey band, each student has to be part of the football marching band.

After a bumpy 0-3 start, the common theme for the No. 20 UND Fighting Sioux men's hockey team has been series splits.

UND dropped their first two games and since then have split with Minnesota State, Wisconsin, Colorado College and last weekend against Alaska Anchorage leaving their record at a sub par 4-6 overall but are still right in the middle of the pack in the WCHA with a 4-4 conference record.

DOUTHITT: Time for Marquette to be more transparent

The Marquette Tribune, Marquette University, WI

Being a Division I athlete in any sport, at any school requires an incredible amount of dedication. Whether they are in the gym, a tough practice, or a crucial game, the idea of giving up or quitting doesn't often enter the minds of the athletes or the coaches.

the same basketball team could be quite the power struggle, especially if one is more experienced and has played in the big games, and the other is a freshman with no collegiate experience. And then there's the case of the Northern Michigan men's basketball team, which has two true point guards, junior Chris Warner and freshman Raymont McElroy.

Fitting in with a new team can be difficult enough for a freshman in the NCAA. UW-Whitewater sophomore forward Chris Vines had to do it twice.
