Reasons Why Not to Talk About the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

Hostile Learning Environment
A work or learning environment is "hostile" when unwelcome verbal, non-verbal, or physical behavior of a prohibited nature is severe and pervasive enough to unreasonably interfere with an employee's work or a student's learning, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment to a "reasonable person." The hostile environment standard focuses on the "poisoning" of a work or learning environment rather than on tangible actions directed against a person. To constitute hostile environment harassment, the prohibited behaviors must be offensive to a "reasonable person." An employer, teacher, co-worker, vendor, or fellow student can create a hostile environment. Individuals holding positions of authority are responsible for ensuring that employees or students do not create a hostile environment.

A single incident or a few incidents may not necessarily rise to the level of illegal harassment; however, a single extreme incident could constitute prohibited discrimination or harassment. Each matter needs to be evaluated individually.

If severe and pervasive enough to interfere with work or learning, the following types of conduct may create a hostile environment:

  • Jokes or insults
  • Flirting
  • Comments about a person's body or sex life
  • Sexually degrading comments
  • Repeated invitations for dates
  • Abusive language directed at a person because of his or her belonging to a protected class
  • Display of posters, cartoons, etc. regarding sexually suggestive themes, race, religion, etc.
  • Pornography
  • Sexually suggestive "gifts"
  • "Stalking" behavior
  • Touching, hugging, kissing, or patting
  • Intentional and repeated brushing or bumping against a person's body
  • Restraining or blocking a person's movement
Some behaviors, which may be acceptable in certain contexts, are inappropriate in the workplace or classroom, particularly if an objection is expressed. Whether or not the behavior is contrary to law or university policy depends upon the circumstances of each case.

Student to Student Relationship

This point is very crucial because we as all students share a campus together. If this comic was released or published, it would affect the intimate relationship between students or classmate and they might view each other differently, therefore.

Cooperative Learning is Very Important:
Establishing the proper environment for cooperative learning is very important. This means that a student learns from another student in groups or studying together. This may hurt the relationship due to the creation of the hostile learning environment caused by the publication of this comic.

Hijaab Viewed as “Batgirl costume”,  Discrimination Against Muslim Women
The Hijaab or (head cover) is a simple of faithfulness and is an honor to Muslim women. They do this to protect themselves from harm of others. The Hijaab for many Muslim women is a strong hold just like the NUNS or SISTERS; if this was to be portrayed as a batgirl costume it would hurt the feeling of these wonderful women. As you know we all come from women and they are our mothers, sisters, grandmothers, and so on and forth. You would not want anyone to offend you mothers or sisters. Would you? Most importantly, we would not want anyone to offend our simples of our faith.

“The right of freedom of Speech may also be used to deny others rights to subordinate and to oppress
.”
                    (John Stewart Miller) Philosopher

This also oppresses Muslim women due to many reasons. For one, this may cause them to feel inferior to others because this comic portrays them as a cartoon character. Secondly, their ways of life is totally being bashed by the cartoonic view in ways that portrays them as an animal inferior to humans like (bats).

Mr. Chris you are rational person who will support decency, and mutual respect among and between the followers of various religions, so please take this opportunity to help the community at large from various ethnic backgrounds and stop this publication.

Importance of the Prophet (PBUH) to Muslims
For a true Muslim, the love of God and His messenger is more than the love of himself.

"The Prophet is closer to the Believers than their own selves…" (Al-Ahzab 33: 6)

As such, Muslims may be more tolerant to a personal insult than an insult directed at his most beloved Prophets.

The Prophet Mohamed is a way of life for us, because we view him as a simple of guidance to mankind. The ways he acted in his daily life duties is our ways of living, too. Ultimately, he is a role model for all Muslims all across the Universe.

The author sites the following quote:

"The right of freedom of Speech may also be used to deny others rights to subordinate and to oppress."

I believe the author is referring to John Steward Mill (not Miller)and the quote is taken out of context. (Continued…)

To the author,

John Stuart Mill (not Stewart Miller) never said "the right of freedom of Speech may also be used to deny others rights to subordinate and to oppress," as you state in your letter. (Continued…)

Get over it; if you decide to attend this school, you don't have to read the paper, etc. I'm here, and could be offended by every little thing, but am more interested in what we're here for: our education. (Continued…)
