A worker from K.A. Hamish company of St. Paul uses a backhoe with a jackhammer attached to demolish part of the plaza steps near Kopp Hall on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009.

The plaza re-building project, which started last week, will be completed in spring 2009 and comprises of two phases. Renovation will occur during the first phase, creating a green slope from the T.Building to Loring Park.

The new design will eliminate stairs and improve universal accessibility of the site. Portions of the T.Building will also be renovated below the plaza and improved methods of water runoff will be added. The first phase should be complete by December. The second phases, which will start next spring, will add new trees and other visual improvements to the space.

The cost of the first phase is being paid for by the State of Minnesota. No details regarding the remaining costs have been released.
