Mavericks defeat Itasca Vikings in Men's Basketball
Win 77-57; Improve to 5-1 on the season

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 4, 2009 -- Michael Welch (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) led all scorers with 26 points as the Minneapolis Community and Technical College Mavericks defeated the Itasca Community College Vikings 77-57 in men's basketball action tonight in Bowman Hall.
The Mavericks (5-1) -- the number one team in NJCAA Div. III -- shot 59.3% from inside the arch and 44.4% from beyond.
Peter Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.) and DeSawn Thurmond (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) both had 12 points, while Kenny Olafeso (So, St. Paul, Minn.) had 11 points.
Freddie Burton (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Peter Olafeso had 5 rebounds apiece.
The Vikings (3-4) were led by Jared Sutherland (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Justin Niemann with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Vikings shot just 35.6 from the field.
The Mavericks return to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting Northland at 3 p.m., following the women's game at 1 p.m.
