Let Tolerance Reign
Letter to the Editor
Layton Smith
The student senate called an urgent meeting to discuss tolerance on campus on Nov. 12.
There was a need to discuss tolerance again because an incident arose from the issue of this being the men's and women's basketball team's last season.
A derogatory and inflammatory letter was left in the office of the senate president. One of the unanimous points that came out of the discussion was that there must be tolerance.
No matter how you feel about the issue (the cancellation of the team by the president and student senate); no organization, club, person, or authority figure should be made to feel threatened at MCTC.
This should be the one place where everyone feels safe. With the diverse population we have at MCTC, we need to offer restraint and offer constructive ideas to help solve these diverse issues. For nothing is every accomplished with violence and intimidation.
Let's:
1. Respect everyone.
2. Treat everyone like you would want to be treated.
3. Voice your opinions in the proper way and forums.
4. Promote peaceful protest following the MCTC code of conduct.
Let's put an end to the nonsense. If you want to show your support for the team, start by showing up at the games. Game dates and times can be found online and on student posting boards throughout the campus.
Start attending student senate meetings. You don't have to be a senator to be heard. Students can't expect change if they don't participate in the process. Another unanimous point of agreement to come out to come out of the senate meeting was the need to diversify the senate and clubs.
The senate needs to hear good diverse ideas from the student body. Please e-mail the senate office or visit the Helland Center for more details.
Again fellow students, show your support to the players by encouraging them to keep their heads up during trying times. Let's let freedom of expression and opinions reign. Let's be more tolerant of each other's views, opinions, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and authority figures.
