Mavericks defeat Mesabi Range in Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 30, 2009) -- Briana Blackhawk (So., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) led all scorers with 25 points as the Minneapolis Community and Technical College defeated Mesabi Range Community and Technical College 76-60 in women's basketball action this afternoon in Bowman Hall. The game was the seventh of eight in the MCTC New Year's classic held yesterday and today.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 11-2 on the season. Mesabi Range falls to 4-7.

The Mavericks (11-2) -- the fourth-ranked team in Division III -- was led by Blackhawk and Sierra Howard (Fr., Bloomington, Minn.), who had 22 points. Natalye Horne (So., St. Paul, Minn.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

The Norse (4-7) were led by an 18-point effort from Jazmyne Woodson (Apple Valley, Minn.). Woodson also grabbed seven steals and totaled 22 points for the tournament.

Rounding out the scoring for the Mavericks were Krystal Queen (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) with 7 points, Sierra Howard (Fr., Bloomington, Minn.) with 5. Amy Miles (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.), Erin Wahl (So., Blaine, Minn.), Layla Toussaint (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kerrick Sarbacker (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.) had 3, 2, 2 and 1 points, respectively.

The Mavericks return to action on Jan. 6 when they take on the Fergus Falls Spartans at 6 p.m. in Bowman Hall.
