Improve to 9-4 with win over Mesabi Range

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 30, 2009) -- Michael Welsh (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) hit five three-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points as Minneapolis Community and Technical College defeated Mesabi Range Community and Technical College 80-59 in the final game of the MCTC New Year's Classic tournament.

The Mavericks (9-4) -- the second-ranked team in the country -- have now won their last two after going one and three in their previous four games. Peter Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.) posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive.

Mesabi Range (3-9) was led by Will Jackson (Fr., Virginia, Minn.), D'Andrey Arther (So., Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Steve Golobich (Fr., Mt. Iron, Minn.) who combined for 37 points.

Rounding out the scoring for the Mavs were Kenny Olafeso (So, St. Paul, Minn.) with 13 points; Ronald Kelly, Jr. (So., St. Paul) and Freddie Burton (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) with 12 points apiece. No other player had more than three points.

MCTC is back in action on Jan. 2 when they travel to Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn. to take on the Royal's JV team. They return home on Jan. 6 when MCTC hosts the Fergus Falls Spartans at 8 p.m.
