James Cameron's Avatar is obviously one of the most pivotal films of this year. If not for his mastery over technology in creating what is a 3D world, then his story writing should be noted as something so true to humanity and life on Earth that it cannot be ignored.

The film take place on Pandora (a planet in the far reaches of outer space newly occupied by men), and much like Earth it is being destroyed by humanity's desire for machines. The film's protagonists are a group of people called the Navi, they worship all nature and largely a tree representing all life on Pandora called Eywa.

The film also shows Sam Worthington's character Jake as the person who was able to cross over successfully into the world of Pandora via what is called an Avatar, and as a result he has won over the people, and fallen in love.

It follows some classic film motifs but the way this film is made is its truest achievement. James Cameron has streamlined the 3D technology in filming and projecting his work. Past 3D experiences do not even compare, you are given roughly two and a half hours of sheer ocular bliss, the deep blues and greens are so captivating that the time in the film breezes by with little effort.

Its message is definitely something that will come under much debate, but the pure camera work and visual excellence is something that is nearly indisputable.

This film is in a different league regarding typical judgment, it transcends so many levels and could even be seen as a fun movie for the entire family just as much as it is something exciting to see by yourself, or on date night. Regardless of your stance on the phenomenon it has created, it is still well worth it to see just as a means of watching a few hours of genius art, I strongly recommend seeing Avatar.
